KUALA LUMPUR: Coach A. Arul Selvaraj is leaving the decision about his future in the hands of the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHC) following the Speedy Tigers' disappointment in failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
The Malaysian team drew 3-3 with Pakistan, leading to their exclusion from the semi-finals of the Olympic Qualifier in Muscat, Oman, on Thursday. Earlier in the competition, Malaysia suffered defeats against China (3-2) and Britain (4-1).
Arul expressed his intentions, stating, "When I return to Malaysia, I will speak to the MHC president and deputy president to discuss my future. Also, the rebuilding must start by injecting youth from state and national sports schools."
Reflecting on the recent matches, Arul highlighted, "We controlled the matches against China and Pakistan but could not convert our chances."
In the game against Pakistan, a victory and a spot in the semi-finals slipped away when Razie Rahim missed his penalty stroke attempt.
"I have yet to speak to Razie. I will find out the reason when we hold a meeting later," Arul remarked.
MHC president Datuk Subahan Kamal had previously indicated the possibility of changes in the team if Malaysia failed to qualify for the Olympics. The coaching staff and players now await decisions and discussions about the team's future direction.
