Snowsill Devoted to Ensuring Robust Representation for Wales in Lions Squad

The anticipation is building as the first-ever female touring party prepares for a thrilling journey to New Zealand for the three-Test Howden British & Irish Lions Women’s Series in September 2027. This groundbreaking move comes after a successful feasibility study explored the potential for a women’s tour.

One prominent figure in the rugby world, Snowsill, aged 34, who earned 76 caps playing for Wales before retiring in August 2023, is now contributing as a player development lead for the East Wales Player Development Centre.

While England currently stands as a dominant force among the home nations, Snowsill, a former fly-half, is determined that the 2027 touring squad won't be solely dominated by the Red Roses.

“I feel very passionately that it’s not just going to be a full England side,” she asserts. “Just because England as a nation have been funded much sooner than the other nations, that doesn’t mean that there are not brilliant, world-class players playing in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland."

Snowsill emphasizes the talent showcased in Premiership Women’s Rugby, where players from Wales, Scotland, and Ireland are excelling. She points out that many of these players received accolades like Player of the Match for their clubs, competing alongside England players.

“To witness and work with girls on the pathway that could potentially be a part of the Lions Women’s squad is going to be incredible,” she adds.

Reflecting on her own journey, Snowsill highlights the significant progress made in women's rugby. During her first World Cup in 2010, the idea of a women’s Lions tour seemed far-fetched. Players taking out loans to represent their country was not uncommon. However, the rapid professionalization of the game in recent years has changed the landscape.

“I’m very realistic in the fact that now is the right time for it,” Snowsill acknowledges. “It would have been incredible to be involved, but I think it’s the right time for the players and it’ll be incredibly exciting for them."

She reminisces about the challenges players faced in the past, having to take out loans to cover expenses while away, and acknowledges the crucial role of professionalization by the Unions in making this tour feasible.

“Being part of a Lions tour would be the pinnacle of any player’s career. It would be a huge honor,” Snowsill concludes, emphasizing the significance of this historic opportunity for women in rugby.
