Bob Marley's Reflective Spirit: A Photographer's Tale of His Constant Companion, the Bible
Bob Marley, who would have celebrated his 79th birthday on Tuesday, left a lasting legacy not only as the world's most famous reggae artist but also as a deeply spiritual individual, according to photographer Kate Simon. Recalling her time with Marley during his 1977 European tour, Simon describes him as both disciplined and reflective.

"On the tour bus, he'd be really reflective," Simon shares, noting Marley's preference for solitude on the bus, often strumming his guitar or reading his Bible. "Even in the airports, he read the Bible. He had a little travel Bible that he brought with him everywhere. I have pictures of him reading it."

Simon, whose book of Marley photos, "Rebel Music: Bob Marley & Roots Reggae," was re-released in November, believes that Marley's spirituality contributes to the timeless appeal of his music. She emphasizes his intelligence and his ability to convey universal thoughts and feelings in his songs, addressing themes of interdependence, humanity, love, and standing up for one's rights.

"He was a real teacher," Simon adds. "He was also very disciplined. He'd always be the first one on the tour bus and at soundcheck before the show. He was very serious about his music, and about everyone around him."

While Marley displayed seriousness and dedication to his craft, Simon highlights his unparalleled charisma. Despite being soft-spoken, Marley had a captivating presence, and according to Simon, "Everyone wanted to be around Bob."

Marley, who passed away from cancer in 1981 at the age of 36, is set to be honored with the release of the biopic "Bob Marley: One Love" on February 14, featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the reggae legend. The film will explore key moments in Marley's life, including his survival of an assassination attempt in Jamaica and his subsequent exile in London, during which he produced iconic albums like "Exodus" and "Kaya."
