In an unexpected turn of events, the Aquarium and Shark Lab by Team Ecco in Hendersonville has announced that one of their stingrays is pregnant, despite not having a male ray in the enclosure.
Initially concerned about the swelling in their ray, named "Charlotte," the aquarium feared she might have cancer. However, an ultrasound revealed multiple growths, later confirmed to be eggs.
Team Ecco shared that a veterinarian has confirmed the possibility of parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction, in rays. Despite this, there may be an alternative explanation for Charlotte's pregnancy.
Upon closer examination, the aquarium discovered bite marks on Charlotte, commonly associated with mating sharks. In July 2023, two young white-spot bamboo sharks were introduced into the tank with Charlotte, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
"We have definitive video of the most current ultrasound showing two if not three pups," Team Ecco stated. "DNA will need to be done after the pups’ birth – unless we have visual cues about a mixed breed."
Considering the close relation between sharks and rays, the possibility of cross-breeding cannot be ruled out. Charlotte is anticipated to give birth any day now, adding a unique and surprising chapter to the aquarium's marine life narrative.
